AI and NLP have actually been in existence since the 1950s. So why are AI and NPL the most talked about topics? With advancements in technology, the proliferation of smart devices and the enormous volumes of available data, AI and NLP have become more accessible, leading to an unprecedented surge in new tools, technology and businesses. In this blog, I will delve into the rich history, explore its evolution and examine how it has transformed the landscape, providing businesses a whole new world of innovative tools and strategies. First, NLP is actually a subcategory of AI which focuses on the interaction between computers and human language, enabling machines to understand, interpret and generate natural language. It involves various techniques and algorithms that allow computers to process and analyze textual data, extract meaning and respond in a human-like manner.
One of the first NLP programs was developed in the late 1950s by IBM researcher John Backus, but it wasn't until the 1970s that significant progress was made in NLP research. The development of NLP technology paved the way for speech recognition, machine translation and text analysis, which are essential components of modern AI. Text analysis is another area where NLP plays a crucial role in AI. With the explosion of data, there is a growing need for effective ways to analyze and interpret large amounts of text. NLP algorithms can analyze unstructured data like social media posts, emails, policy documents, strategic plans, customer reviews and even archives of legal libraries and medical research to gain insights and make data-driven decisions swiftly. What can take a human dozen of hours, can be done in seconds.
